New Zealand’s new and updated privacy legislation will come into effect on 1 December this year.

The new Privacy Act reflects changing attitudes to privacy, the increased use of technology in daily life and legal developments overseas.

Gareth Abdinor, Partner at Malley & Co, will describe the background to the new Act and will cover the key changes from the Privacy Act 1993 which include:

  • Mandatory privacy breach notification
  • Access directions
  • Compliance and enforcement – including new criminal offences
  • The new principle 12 – cross-border disclosures
