AML Regulations are coming in 2026.
Is your firm ready?

Anti Money Laundering (AML) regulations will come into effect and be applicable to all law firms from July 2026. To ensure your firm is across these changes, we have prepared a dedicated training program for ALPMA members throughout 2025.

In 2026, changes to AML compliance requirements in Australia will significantly change the way many firms operate, in particular, during client on-boarding processes.

There is a lot to learn about AML compliance and how to implement the right procedural changes for your firm. We strongly recommend starting now and taking advantage of ALPMA’s comprehensive AML Learning & Development program in 2025, established in partnership with First AML.

What you need to know:

Regulations come into effect: July 2026.

This date is the finish line. Law firms need to be fully compliant by 1 July 2026.

AML will impact the way clients are onboarded.

Client intake processes will need to change, and in most cases legal work cannot start until AML is completed.

A risk-based approach is key.

Firms will need to assess and manage money laundering risks based on their clients, services and transactions rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

Client due diligence (CDD) and ongoing monitoring are mandatory.

Firms must verify client identities, assess risk levels and continuously monitor for suspicious activity.

Compliance policies and training are essential.

Firms will need to implement AML policies, appoint a compliance officer, and train staff to meet regulatory requirements.
