Through ALPMA, and thanks to legalsuper, you can now access Mental Health First Aid Australia’s (MHFA) blended MHFA training course that has been tailored to legal industry. Currently this course is only available for Australians.
This course is a combination of an online (eLearning) component (approx 6-8 hours to complete) and 2 x 2.5-hour online (via Zoom) training session that teaches managers, supervisors and individuals how to assist a co-worker who might be developing a mental health problem or is experiencing a mental health crisis. Within the general community there is a high prevalence of mental illness with 1 in 5 people suffering a mental health problem in any given year, however there is an even higher prevalence within the legal sector with 1 in 3 people experiencing a mental health problem in any given year. This might include (but is not limited to) depression, anxiety, substance abuse or stress, at a level that is considered unhealthy. Early recognition of signs and symptoms can lead to a return to usual performance quickly and can alleviate the problem worsening. Would you know how to assist a co-worker who was experiencing a mental health problem? It’s important that you do, but it is equally as important that multiple people within your firm know how to assist too. MHFA Training should be encouraged across seniority, departments and genders to ensure diversity of support.
