Every year ALPMA conducts a Salary and HR Issues Survey of Australian and New Zealand law firms. With a sharper lens on performance, capability and workforce sustainability, ALPMA's newly refreshed HR Issues and Salary Survey captures this shift with more depth, clarity and transparency than ever before.

This year's survey is not just an update, it's a full redesign, the insights expanded to reflect the realities of a profession navigating rising salary pressure, tightening support structures, and a workforce reshaped by technology and changing expectations.

This year in Australia 298 law firms participated (361 offices) & 10,500+ salary data points collected. In New Zealand 140 law firms participated (161 offices) and 4,390 salary data points collected.

Key themes emerging in 2026:

  • Salaries continue to outpace the broader economy;
  • Support structures are tightening;
  • Billable hour expectations remain central;
  • Charge-out rates reveal a clear seniority premium;
  • Gender representation improves - but gaps persist at the top;
  • Bonuses are now a mainstream part of remuneration;
  • Turnover remains high and replacement-driven

Join Emma Elliott (CEO, ALPMA), Jason Elias (Elias Recruitment) and Alex Stones (Fluid Legal Recruitment) as they provide an insightful overview of the 2026 survey, which is not just more detailed, but more actionable. Don't miss the opportunity to hear from Jason and Alex for on-the-ground insights on what they are seeing and hearing from their clients!

For leaders navigating a market defined by rising expectations, constrained support capacity and intensifying competition for talent, this year's report offers clarity where it's needed most.
