This session will unpack the Chief Operating Officer/General Manager (COO/GM) role in Australian and NZ law firms in 2025. It will address the long-term trends in the scope, responsibility and complexity of the role, as well as future leadership and technology-based challenges. Joel will discuss how our panel members shared their advice on how to influence without authority, particularly when working with senior partners and legal staff. Each panel member shared their firm’s and their personal growth journey, and the key factors that have underpinned success. The discussion will explore how a COO/GM should approach their own learning and career development.

He writes for the Australian Financial Review Legal Affairs section and the LCA’s Law Management Hub. Previously, Joel was head of the strategy practice of Beaton Research & Consulting.
