Katherine Thomas | CEO Free Range Lawyers and Katherine Thomas Consulting

Katherine understands the challenges of managing and developing legal service businesses because she has experience both as a ‘fee-earner’ and as a business development adviser.

In 2013, she established the flexible resourcing service Vario for international law firm Pinsent Masons (www.pinsentmasons.com/vario). By growing long-term client relationships as well as gaining new clients, she grew Vario from an idea to an award-winning, business in under three years that now has international coverage. Prior to that, Katherine spent 15 years in senior business development, communications and knowledge roles, leading major change projects across multiple geographies and establishing Pinsent Masons’ firmwide client development programme.

Katherine is now CEO of Free Range Lawyers, a contract lawyer business specifically for law firms. She also runs her own consultancy – Katherine Thomas Consulting Pty - that helps law firms grow by developing existing client relationships, establishing new relationships and launching new services.

In addition, Katherine is a Teaching Fellow on the first Master in Legal Business course, delivered by The College of Law, provides partner coaching, facilitates partner retreats and speaks at partner conferences. She is a lecturer at The College of Law in WA, a member of the Law Consultancy Network, a regular speaker at industry events, including ICON and ALPMA and is a member of The College of Law Innovation Centre’s panel.

Overview:

The requirement to manage legal risk no longer necessarily entails the need for a law firm. It also no longer automatically results in a lawyer being consulted. Clients now have a range of options for managing their legal risks.

Where does this leave established law firms?

The good news is that, with a range of scaleable options available, now is the time that creative and committed firms of all sizes can become more than the sum of their parts. They can be more than the price paid for the time their people work. They can spread risk by making money in new and different ways at the same time as providing an exceptional service to their clients. Far from being dark and uncertain, these are, in fact, exciting times.

In this session, Katherine Thomas will explore ways in which established firms can realise their potential by deploying newlaw strategies to delight 21st century clients while remaining profitable enterprises. Her approach is practical, specific and example-led. What’s more, her suggestions are low cost! Attendees will leave with an appreciation of implementable ways in which they can adapt their approach to thrive in changing times.
