Session 12A - The Big Rocks
The presentation is a system of Client , File , Time and Personal management that has been developed over 27 years in practice. Its main focus is based on 2 basic premises.
The first is the relative lack of emphasis in the legal industry on super smart time management and prioritizeation. There is emphasis on how smart a lawyer is and how good the precedents are and how many hours they work on weekends and at night but very little on how smart they work.
Many lawyers are tagged as legends because they work 60 hours a week but not those that work 40 hours super efficeintly and achieve better results and have a more balanced life style.
The system looks at methods to examine a lawyers workload , be they partner or first year , and determine what is the reality and what is smokescreen. Lawyers are experts at hiding behind desks covered in files , telephones ringing off the hook and stressed out Personal assistants.Often the reality of what they are actually doing or shouldnt be doing is totally different to the image being portrayed.
The presentation looks at the issues of prioritizeation and delegation. Matching time to task is also an essentila element of the paper. Most lawyers do not reserve the most productive time of the day to the tasks that demand the most mental energy and attention. There are tactics that can be used to rearrange time schedules to ensure the tough job is tackled at the most optimum time.
The second premise is client communication. We need to realize that our files are not a conglomeration of paper and ink but the biggest issue that is happening in their clients life at that time. I talk about a series of techniques that will ensure your client is aware of progress at all times.
