April 09 Around the States - Queensland
QLS Symposium
ALPMA Queensland sponsored some of the Practice Management sessions at the QLS Symposium in March. Three of the sessions featured speakers from the Queensland Executive. Thank you to Giles Watson, Tony Grant and Mary Hockaday for their fine presentations.
Monthly Seminars
Our first monthly seminar of the year was presented by Peter Lynch from dci lyncon, Legal Practice Management Consultants. Peter examined the challenges of client retention and in particular the issues a small firm faces when trying to instil its management principles, work style and client relationships on others in the firm so they can be sure they are all delivering the same message to clients. He discussed the importance of training our lawyers to have ‘whole conversations’ with clients and to ensure they cover all the administrative and commercial aspects of the matter they are working on as well as the work in hand.
On March 17th, St Patricks day, our speaker was Paddy Oliver who discussed the scope and impact of our likely obligations under Tranche Two of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing Act, 2006. Paddy travelled up from Melbourne where he is Director, Legal Risk, at SSAMM Management Consulting. He asked us to consider our responsibilities in the context of “reputation management for your firm”, suggesting that you do a risk assessment, and write a program to keep the money launderers out and the regulators away.
The Queensland ALPMA meets every third Wednesday in the 4th floor Auditorium at Queensland Law Society House, Ann Street, Brisbane. Program commences at 12.30 with a light lunch and networking. Speaker presentation starts at 1pm. DVD recordings of the presentations are available for purchase and could earn you 1 CPD point.
Regional Seminars
We have three speakers presenting at our Gold Coast Seminar on 14th May, which we plan to extend to other regions in 2009.
Ashley Tulley “Marketing on a shoestring”,
Tony Grant “Succession Planning”
Peter Lynch “Practice Management Fundamentals”.
Our learning and development committee has worked hard to finalise our monthly seminar program for the year. I encourage you to attend as many sessions as you can and invite others in law practice management to come along as your guest. I look forward to meeting you at our next seminar.
Kind regards
Gill Duffy, President, ALPMA QLD
